What to Wear Wedding Dress Shopping – Top Tips

Shopping for your wedding dress is one of the most exciting moments of your wedding journey – and at From Above, it’s even more special, because the dress you try on is the dress you take home. That’s why it’s so important to come prepared and dress appropriately for your appointment.

Here’s our expert guide to what to wear when you come wedding dress shopping with us, and why it really does make a difference.

Why What You Wear Matters at From Above

Unlike many bridal shops that use sample gowns and then order your dress separately, From Above is different: the gown you try is the gown you buy. This means we take extra care to keep our dresses in immaculate condition.

So while we want you to feel relaxed and comfortable during your appointment, we also ask that you follow a few simple guidelines to protect the quality of our gowns and ensure you have the best possible experience.

Please Avoid Fake Tan and Heavy Makeup

We know you want to look your best – but we kindly ask that you do not wear fake tan, body bronzer, or heavy foundation to your appointment. These products can easily transfer onto delicate fabrics like lace, tulle and silk, leaving marks that are very difficult (and sometimes impossible) to remove.

Since you’ll be trying on your actual wedding dress, any damage caused by makeup or tan could affect your final gown. Keeping your skin clean and fresh allows you to try dresses freely without worry – and helps us maintain our beautiful gowns for every bride who walks through our doors.

Wear Nude or Light-Coloured Underwear

Many wedding dresses are light in colour or feature sheer panels – so nude, seamless underwear is your best friend when it comes to trying on gowns. A strapless bra or stick-on cups are also a good option, but not essential – many of our gowns are designed with built-in structure and support.

Avoid bright colours or dark lingerie as these can be distracting when viewing yourself in the mirror, and may show through light fabrics.

Choose Something You Can Easily Change In and Out Of

You’ll likely be trying on several dresses during your appointment, so it helps to wear clothing that’s easy to slip off and on again. Think leggings or joggers, a cami top, or a zip-up jumper – avoid anything that needs to be pulled over your head once your makeup or hair is done.

Although we do offer a robe to slip on in between dresses but you still want to wear something easily taken on and off.

Also, if you’ve already bought your wedding shoes or are planning to wear a specific heel height, feel free to bring them along. If not, we do also sell shoes in the shop so you can have a look and maybe try some with your dress to see what you thin and help you get a feel for the full bridal look.

Tie Your Hair Up (or Bring a Clip)

Wearing your hair down might be how you picture yourself on the big day – but when you’re trying on dresses, it’s helpful to bring a hair bobble or clip to get your hair off your shoulders. This makes it easier to see the neckline and back detail of each gown, and can give you a clearer picture of how different styles work on you.

Plus it can get a little warm taking dresses on and off, even though we have air conditioning, so sometimes it can be nice just to get your hair up off your neck.
